Denise Irene McKinney

Denise Irene McKinney, lovingly known as “Brat,” passed away on May 29, 2026, at Banner Baywood Hospital at the age of 74.

Born on June 14, 1951, in East Cleveland, Ohio, Denise lived a life filled with laughter, strong opinions, deep love, and more than a little stubbornness. Those who knew her best knew she earned her nickname “Brat,” and she wore it proudly.

Denise dedicated more than 40 years of her life to teaching preschool children. It was her true calling and greatest passion. She had a gift for connecting with young children and helping them discover the world around them. Few things brought her more joy than being in a classroom.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Gladys Columbia; her sister, Denelda “Dee-Dee” Jones; and her husband, Steven McKinney.

Denise is survived by her son, Derrick Hull, and his wife, Tara, who are expecting a son in October; her daughter, Mindy Wasilewski; her grandson, Izaiah Wasilewski; her brothers, Dennis and Darryl; and her longtime partner of nearly 30 years, Ralph Valenzuela.

Denise loved spending time at the beach, reading a good book, sharing a glass of tequila with friends, and finding reasons to laugh. She was often the life of the party, bringing humor, energy, and stories wherever she went.

Like many families, Denise’s family relationships were not always simple. Life brought joys, hardships, and challenges that shaped the paths of those who loved her. Yet through it all, there were moments that remain treasured. Her children still lovingly remember painting Christmas ornaments with her, keepsakes they continue to hold onto today. Those memories speak to the fun, creative, and loving parts of Denise that will not be forgotten.

Those who knew Denise understood that she carried both great strengths and great struggles. She experienced profound loss throughout her life, particularly after the deaths of her mother and husband. While those losses changed her, they never erased the humor, spirit, and love that remained part of who she was.

Denise has been laid to rest at Mesa City Cemetery alongside her husband, Steve, and her mom, Gladys.

She leaves behind a family whose story with her was rich, complicated, and real. She will be remembered for her laughter, her passion for teaching, her fierce personality, and the memories that continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

No services will be held.
