Foy Gene Powell

As a young man, he enjoyed spending time at his grandfather’s ranches near his hometown of Lordsburg, New Mexico and in Wyoming.

He graduated from Western New Mexico University and was a band and choir director for many years.  He finished his career teaching 6th grade which he enjoyed very much. He loved music and was in a dance band with his close friends and played at many events in Arizona and New Mexico.

He was a devoted father and husband and enjoyed attending the many activities his children were involved in.  As an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints he served faithfully in many callings over his lifetime including a mission with his wife Barbara at the Salt Lake Family History Center.

Besides music, he was a man of many talents and interests such as working in his yard spending many hours making his home look beautiful.  He was creative and loved art.

Foy loved life and was a friend to everyone.  His great sense of humor endeared him to all. Making people laugh was one of his biggest talents.  A kind man, he found opportunities to serve others whenever needed and often without being asked.

He was preceded in death by his parents Foy and Effie and his brother Gary. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Barbara, his five children Shannon Vasquez (Adolfo), Bryant Powell (Jennifer Willis), Renee Powell, Troy Powell and Melinda Witson (Clarence II). He will also be missed by nine grandchildren:  Adam, Ben and Cira Sandoval, Audrey, Lauren and Kendall Powell, and Ava, Clarence III and Camilla Witson.

Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 15 at the LDS Church, 5620 E Adobe Road, Mesa, AZ. 85205

I will always remember working with Foy at Duncan High School and then again at Ft Thomas Schools. May he Rest In Peace as he leads a heavenly choir.

I will always remember Mr. Powell as my band and choir teacher at Duncan High School and he and Barbara as next door neighbors and friends to my Uncle Hubert Bowman. I think I still have the distinction of being the only student from Duncan High School to have made All-State Choir. I still think about him often and with great fondness.

Foy was the most amazing man!!! I always saw him running around, helping everyone and making everyone feel so welcomed. He always asked how you were doing and what was going on in your life. Never talking about himself. He was the most selfless man. We love you Foy!!
