Hubert Mayo

Mayo, Hubert 82, of Apache Junction went to be with the Lord on February 7, 2012 after a long bout with cancer. Hubert was born in Oklahoma on October 11, 1929 and moved to Gilbert with his parents as a child where he attended Gilbert schools. He first met his beloved wife, Ruth (Hamblin), at church in Mesa and they were married on July 11, 1952. Together they raised two sons and a daughter. His dear wife Ruth passed away on March 30, 2009. Soon after the loss of his life partner of 57 years, Hubert’s own health began to deteriorate. He was an active outdoors man all his life and loved big game hunting and fishing, particularly deep sea fishing. In the very latter days of his illness with cancer he was still plotting with his son, Ron on how they could construct a device to load and strap Hubert’s wheelchair onto Ron’s pontoon boat so they could go bass fishing together just once more. Although Hubert seldom discussed it, he was a decorated Army combat veteran who served in the US Army in the frigid temperatures of North Korea. He was among the first forces to land when the war began. He and his three brothers from Gilbert all served at the same time during the Korean War and the four men are honored for their service as a family group by a memorial placed in the City of Gilbert. When he was discharged and returned home he was employed by the Salt River Project as a Systems Operator on the Horse Mesa Dam at Apache Lake. Later he applied for a position in the Arizona Department of Transportation in highway maintenance and remained there for years until he retired. Due to his friendly manner Hubert made many lifelong friends wherever he worked. Hubert is survived by two sons, Steve (Tena), Ron of Apache Junction, daughter Debra (Randy) Tipton of Apache Junction ,one brother, Dub, (Winona) of Mesa, a sister Ella Mae Sheptick of Chicago, Illinois., nine grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren. A consoling comfort for the family and friends he leaves behind comes from knowing that Hubert is now in the hands of our Lord Jesus Christ, free of pain, and happily reunited with his devoted wife, Ruth. A memorial service will be held at the Foothills Assembly of God at (1215 S. Winchester, Apache Junction, AZ) on February 11, 2012 at 11 AM.
