Janet (Jan) Mattausch, a beloved mother, educator and devoted follower of Christ, passed away on July 5, 2026. She was born on January 5, 1931, in Jackson, Michigan. Jan’s family later moved to Adrian, where she lived until she graduated from high school.
In 1952, Jan married Edwin Mattausch, her childhood friend. After Jan received her bachelor’s degree in English education from Eastern Michigan University and her master’s degree from the University of Michigan, she taught English, Spanish and French in Detroit metropolitan high schools for several years. In 1957, the couple began their family in Wayne, Michigan where all three of their children were born. In 1968, their family relocated to Mesa, Arizona. It was in Mesa that Jan committed her life to her lord and savior Jesus Christ.
Jan dedicated nearly forty years of her life to Trinity Christian School, serving as a kindergarten and first-grade teacher and later as principal. Her passion was teaching children to read, enabling them to discover the word of God. Her wisdom, knowledge, and unwavering devotion to Christ made her a treasure to all who knew her.
Jan is survived by her brother, Thomas Lovitt; her children, Anne Devermann, John Mattausch, and Sally Flanigan; eight grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Doris Lovitt, and her sister, Marjorie Bailey.
