John Herr

John Herr Direct Cremation Mesa AZ

John Raymond Herr was born in Keota, Iowa, on March 18, 1943, to the late Raymond and Mae Herr. He passed away at his home in Mesa, AZ, just two days after his 77th birthday on March 20, 2020.
John grew up and became a farmer in southeast Iowa, as was his father before him, and his father, before him. John went to Iowa State University, and then was in the Army Reserves, he had fond memories of this time, though he rarely shared them. Another trait John had in common with his father was his ability to talk to anyone. Neither man ever met a stranger. John moved to Mesa, AZ, when he retired in 2005. He thoroughly enjoyed his life and his retirement. He was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in October 2018. He had surgery and chemotherapy and seemed to be at his new normal, however difficult it may have been. Singing in the church choir was a lifelong pleasure for John. He sang in his last concert the Sunday before his death with the Village Voices group at Sunland Springs Village in Mesa. Their fall concert will be dedicated to him. John may not have been ‘loved by all’, but there are more than a few who saw him as a positive minded, outgoing man who liked to make people smile.
John is survived by his three children, Natalie Ault, Ashley (Jill) Herr, and Alison (Mike) Goril, as well as five grandsons: Ryan Ault, Ethan and Sean Herr, and Liam and Lucas Goril.
Arrangements had been prearranged for John to be cremated. Due to covid-19 there will be no service at this time. John had expressed his wish for his ashes to be spread near Saguaro Lake, in Apache Junction, AZ. A small family memorial will possibly be planned for this fall.
John had no favorite charities, but if anyone wishes to, they may send donations to Village Voices, in care of Natalie Ault, 8120 Lanceleaf Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89131.
