Mark Alan Shields, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, August 31st at the age of 56.
Born April 26, 1969, in Phoenix, Arizona, Mark was the youngest of four children of H. Gordon and Sharon Pearl Reneer Shields. He grew up surrounded by love, faith, and music—a passion he discovered early on and carried throughout his life.
Mark excelled in school and athletics at Washington High School, where he was a standout in track and cross-country. After graduating, he attended Brigham Young University and served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Lisbon, Portugal, a place that forever held a special place in his heart.
In 1992, Mark married the love of his life, Cami Chamberlain, in the Manti Utah Temple. Together they built a family centered on faith, service, music, and love, raising five daughters who were the joy of his life. He also cherished his role as “Kuppa” to seven grandchildren.
Mark graduated from BYU’s J. Reuben Clark Law School in 1997 and went on to have a distinguished career as an attorney, specializing in family law and appellate work. His expertise influenced Arizona law in meaningful ways, and he was a trusted advocate for countless clients.
An active and devoted member of his faith, Mark served in many callings, including bishop, high councilor, and seminary teacher. His passion for gospel teaching and symbolism led him to publish six books and inspire many with his deep understanding of temple covenants.
Mark’s talents and interests were as wide as they were unique—whether running marathons (including the Boston Marathon), handcrafting speakers and Harry Potter wands, or sharing music trivia with friends. He loved roller coasters, thrift stores, baking bread, and most of all, time in his garden with his grandchildren.
Mark is survived by his wife, Cami; their daughters Heidi Priday (Sterling), Kayla Hofeling (Jaren), Claire Judd (Stuart), Anna Fish (Cole), and Robyn Shields; seven grandchildren; and his siblings Shauna, Scott, and Karin. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Mark will be remembered for his loyalty, his love of music, his gift for teaching the gospel, and his unwavering devotion to family and faith.
