Nieuwenhuis, Bernita May

Bernita May Nieuwenhuis

Bernita May Nieuwenhuis passed away in Mesa, Arizona on August 19, 2017.  She was born at Avon, South Dakota on July 17, 1925 to John and Belle (Engel) Nieuwenhuis. She was the oldest of four children.

In her teens she chose to walk with God and then in 1951 at age twenty-six offered her life for the Lord’s harvest field. She spent the next sixty-one years bringing the truth of Jesus to others and ministering to their needs in Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and Louisiana. When a fall put her into nursing care she continued to write letters to many people she had met through the years and loved hearing back from them. In 2015, she moved to Arizona where her sweet spirit and inspiring example continued to touch those she came in contact with; her care for others and love for souls never ceased.

Bernita is preceded in death by her parents, John and Belle Nieuwenhuis and a sister, Violet Nieuwenhuis. She is survived by a sister, Blanche (Harold) Nelson, a brother Harold Nieuwenhuis, six nephews: Nick (Michelle) Nieuwenhuis, Kary (Barbara) Nieuwenhuis, Wayne (Jaimie) Nelson, Duane (Jaala) Nelson, Scott (Elaine) Nelson, Tracy (Meagan) Nelson, ten great nieces and nephews: Marissa and Nicolas Nieuwenhuis and Laura, Hannah, Shaylee, Melaina, Jory, Landon, Logan and Jadyn Nelson along with countless friends and fellow laborers.

The memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on August 25, 2017 at:  Lakeshore Mortuary, 1815 South Dobson Road, Mesa, AZ 85202.

Dear Blanche and family,

First met Bernita when she came to LA to labor. Then came to NE and got to meet your parents, and Vi. Appreciated each way they encouraged the best in me, in us. Was so good to see her in NE just days before she went to AZ.
So nice to think of you and Harold, and your boys, all gathering now. We will be thinking of you.

Love and care, with appreciation, Glenda Pickering
