Obituary
Dale Lee Nuyen, 82, passed away on March 7th, 2025, in Mesa, AZ.
Born on December 27th, 1942, in Kalamazoo, MI, Dale grew up in Portage and graduated from Portage High School in June of 1960. He went on to attend Michigan State University in East Lansing, where he laid the foundation for a successful career in Finance. A hard-working young man from the start, he worked alongside his stepfather during high school before embarking on a distinguished career as the Chief Financial Officer for several large hospitals in the Phoenix area. Even after retiring, Dale remained active with various entrepreneurial ventures that kept him engaged and fulfilled.
Following college, Dale enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served as an airplane mechanic for four years and earned the rank of Captain. His time in the military instilled in him a strong sense of discipline and dedication that carried through every aspect of his life.
Dale had a deep love for sports and competition. He and his beloved wife, Lois Marie Nuyen, shared a passion for cards, bowling and golf, often playing as partners. In later years, he found great joy in playing pool with his close friends at Sunland Village East in Mesa. His love for animals was also evident – he truly adored his dogs and cherished their companionship.
Those who knew Dale will remember him as patient and kind but with a wicked sense of humor that could light up any room. He deeply loved his wife and family and maintained close relationships throughout his life. Dale and Lois did not have children of their own, but instead became a second set of parents for their nieces, Debby & Julie.
Dale was preceded in death, by his wife Lois Marie Nuyen; his mother, Betty Jean Sweetland; his father, William Nuyen Jr.; his stepfather, Peter Kuilema; his sister-in-law, Judith Ann Berg; and his brother-in-law, William Mathias Berg. He is survived by his nieces Deborah Jean Struempler and Julie Lynne Myers; his great-nephews and great-nieces Gavin, Jordan, Jessica, Caleb and Ashley.
May Dale’s memory bring comfort to those who knew him and serve as a reminder of a life well lived.
