Obituary

Fern Marie DuBray was born on November 1, 1960 in Winner, South Dakota. She attended Marty (Mission) Indian school and the University of South Dakota. After graduating, she relocated to the desert southwest to attend pharmacy school and build her life among the saguaros and sunsets.

Fern was a brilliant pharmacist, avid reader, lover of yard sales, and a rice pudding enthusiast.

Fern’s last months were filled with trips to the forest and the sea, the joy of her grandchildren, and the comfort of her family.

On November 14, 2025, after a valiant 20 month journey through stage IV ampullary carcinoma, Fern returned to the spirit world, peacefully at home.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents, John Hugh DuBray Sr. and Mary Lou Peneaux; her sisters, Mona Sharkey and Johanna DuBray; her brother, Leo DuBray; an infant sister and brother; her grandmother, Nora Clairmont; and many other loved ones.

She is survived by her children, Alisha Morrison (Rory) and Jacob Schmidt; her grandchildren, Rose Morrison and River Morrison; her sisters, Molly DuBray of Burke, SD; Larry and Ethel (DuBray) Sharkey of Rapid City, SD; Lee and Kathy (DuBray) Peneaux of Winner, SD; Janice DuBray of Rapid City, SD; Joe and Lynette (DuBray) Poor Thunder; and Bill and Nichole (DuBray) Klatt; her brothers, John DuBray II of Martin, SD; Andy and Crystal DuBray of Winner, SD; Jason and Jerilyn DuBray of Rapid City, SD; and Nicholas DuBray of Rapid City, SD; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held in early winter in South Dakota.
