Obituary

James Eilert “Jim” Randt—affectionately known as Jimmy to many—passed away peacefully on September 26, 2025, in Mesa, Arizona, at the age of 86. Born February 4, 1939, near Granite Falls, Minnesota, Jim lived a life marked by hard work, devotion to family, and a joyful spirit that touched everyone he met.

Jim served his country with honor in the Army Reserve and was honorably discharged in 1964. His sense of duty and service extended throughout his life. He was always someone family and friends could count on—whether fixing cars, hanging ceiling fans, or tackling DAD projects. With tools in hand and a smile on his face, he was happiest helping others.

After his military service, Jim began his working life in Minnesota as a welder and working on grain elevators—positions that reflected his strong work ethic and hands-on skills. Later, after moving to Arizona, he joined Safeway Warehouse, where he worked until his retirement in 2005. His career was defined not only by the jobs he held, but by the pride he took in doing them well.

In 1961, Jim married Virginia, marking the beginning of a lifelong partnership filled with love and purpose. Together, they raised three children: Timothy (Madonna) Randt, Thomas (Trina) Randt, and Teresa (Mike) Valdez. Family was the heart of Jim’s life. He adored his grandchildren—Thalia Perez; Nicolas Randt; Adam Randt; TJ Randt; Ashley Lowe; Brittany Randt; Guillermo “Billy” Randt; Brittany Maria Randt; Kendra Truitt; Mackenzie Baker; Derek Valdez; Alex Valdez; Marisa Valdez; Zachary Randt; Matthew Valdez; and Jacob Randt—and cherished his 13 great-grandchildren, who brought happiness across generations. He is also survived by two brothers, Dale (Margaret) Randt and Lee (Elaine) Randt; and sisters-in-law, Joyce Randt and Alice Randt. He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 siblings.

Jim loved camping trips that brought everyone together under one sky, entertaining guests, and sharing his knowledge with younger generations. His presence filled every room with laughter, warmth, and strength.

He had many sayings, but his favorite was, “One step at a time.” He had an infectious sense of humor and never missed an opportunity to brighten someone’s day. His kindness and humor left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

Jim’s legacy is one of love freely given, time generously shared, and laughter passed down through generations. His ability to fix just about anything was matched only by his gift for lifting spirits with a joke or kind word. He leaves behind not just well-used tools and completed projects, but lives deeply enriched by his presence.
