Obituary

Ruth Eleanor Mogen, age 97 of Mesa AZ, passed away on June 24, 2023 after suffering a major stroke.  Ruth was born in Jerseyville, IL on October 3, 1925, the oldest of four children.  At the age of 17 she began working at the Owens Illinois Glass Factory and continued for 18 years.  In 1946 she married Fred Haynes and they were married for 41 years.  Ruth joined the Methodist church in 1961 and became very active in the United Methodist Women’s Group and also taught Sunday school.  Fred and Ruth moved to Mesa, AZ in 1975 and Ruth went to work at Desert Palms for many years.  Fred passed away in 1987.  A couple years later at a church service Ruth met Sigvard Mogen and in Nov 1990 she and Sig were married.  They lived in Dreamland Villa in Mesa for 11 years until Sig passed in May 2002.  Ruth remained in the home for another 13 years and during that time became a dedicated worker at the Velda Rose semi-annual rummage sales.  She moved to Discovery Point Retirement Community in 2015 where she enjoyed playing bingo, card games and Wii bowling.

Ruth loved boating, camping, surfboarding and bowling.  She enjoyed entertaining and cooking.  She was a devoted member of the Velda Rose Methodist Church prayer chain.  Ruth especially loved animals and even raised a pet skunk and its babies in Illinois.  She also nursed baby birds abandoned by their mother. She had two dogs who died of old age.  She never had children of her own, but loved them.  She was blessed with four stepchildren from Fred Haynes and five stepchildren from Sig Mogen.

Ruth is survived by stepchildren:  Kay Anderson (Howard), Karen Ingvaldson, Lucy Monahan (William), James Mogen (Monica), Rosemary Alderman (Charles), Janice DeCourcy (Bruce) and many step grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her first husband Fred Haynes, second husband Sigvard Mogen, parents Leo and Dorothy Pickett, one sister Ida Young, two brothers LaVerne and Wayne Pickett, stepson Robert Haynes, stepdaughter Jackie (Elaine) Mackelden, and stepson John Mogen (Tina).

Celebration of Life for Ruth will be held at Discovery Point Retirement Community, 6210 E Arbor Ave, Mesa, AZ on July 6, 2023 from 11am-12:30pm.
