Obituary

Chuck Self, died unexpectedly from complications of a heart attack and pneumonia on 27 November 2018 in Mesa, Arizona at the age of 88.  Chuck was born in Saguache, Colorado to Ed and Stella Self on 5 August 1930.  He spent 25 years in military service, retiring from the Air Force in 1973.

During high school in Monte Vista, he joined the Army National Guard. After the National Guard, he tried to reenlist in the Army, but they were out to lunch so he joined the Army Air Corps. He retired from the Air Force in 1973 after 25 years of military service.  He served in Europe, the Pacific (where he saw combat in both Korea and Viet Nam) and all across the United States.

Chuck is survived by his brothers: Merv (Darla) and Bill (Peggy), his sister Beatrice, his children Cindy (Mark), Ric (Tina), Sharon (Kenny), Rory (Karen) and his former wife Jo. His son Robb predeceased him.  He leaves behind 11 grandchildren: Linzy, Katie, Amy, Krista, Lisa, Chantalle, Becca, Rachel, Mark, Kaela and Cara along with 11 great grandchildren: Brooklyn, Stella, Emily, Rainie, Marshall, Willow, Robert, Lilly, Jack, Millie and Troy. Lots of nieces, nephews, cousins along with his beloved Seton Girls basketball team – extended family will all miss him terribly.

A memorial service celebrating Chuck’s life will be held on 7 December 2018 at 1100am at the 1st Presbyterian Church (161 N. Mesa Drive  Mesa, AZ). He will be interred (with ceremonies) at the Colorado State Veterans Center Cemetery in Monte Vista (Homelake), Colorado later next summer.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in his honor to one of the following organizations:

  • Bugles Across America (buglesacrossamerica.org)
  • Wreaths Across America (wreathsacrossamerica.org for the cemetery where he will be interred use code COCSVC)

He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and anyone who knew him.
