Obituary
Steven G. Edwards was born September 14, 1946 to Mary Lucetta Chidester and Gerald Edwards, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Steve’s Mom and Dad divorced when he was 3 and Steve’s Mom remarried Vern Slaughter and moved to Tooele, Utah, where Steve grew up and went to School.. They had a Son Sheldon who was Steve’s beloved brother. Although Vern never oficially adopted Steve, Steve felt that Vern was his Dad. All throughout his school years he was known as Steve Slaughter. But due to the draft that was in effect when he turned 18 he was required to go by his “official” name and he was known as Steve Edwards from that point on. Steve learned to play the drums as a teen and started playing in bands. He loved being a drummer and played for many events around Tooele and Salt Lake. His band won a battle of the bands competition. As a young entrepreneur Steve started a teen dance club for his band to play at and the family worked every weekend. Mom selling tickets, Dad selling soda pop and Steve and the band playing for the dances. Steve learned then the importance of advertising and started advertising on the radio in Salt Lake. Steve attended Utah State University, William B. Ogden school for Radio Engineers, where he earned his First Class Engineering license. This license gave him the opportunity to work in radio and television which became his life’s work.
Steve moved to Las Vegas to work at the ABC affiliate, Channel 13. While working there Steve worked in production and sales. Steve produced the local talk show and became acquainted with many of the Stars working in Las Vegas. After working at channel 13, Steve started his own advertising agency, which over the years produced thousands of television commercials.
Steve married Melanie LaLonde on December 5, 1981. At the time Steve had 2 sons Anthony Vincent and Steven G. Edwards II. Melanie Had a daughter Sara Evelyn. They created a ready made family. On December 5, 1990 This family became an eternal family, Sealed in the Las Vegas Temple. Steve loved his family and was so proud of his kids. He coached little-league teams, attended games and dance recitals. Cheered at band concerts and voice recitals. Attended every Opera that Sara was in, although not the music he was most familiar with, Steve learned to love Opera (if Sara was in it). Sara bought him a polo shirt that he loved that said “Life is short, Opera is long”.
In 1997 the family relocated to Sherman Oaks, California. While in California, Steve worked on many television shows as writer, producer and director. Steve was Producer of an Emmy-nominated mini series for PBS entitled “The Remarkable 20th Century.” In Sherman Oaks Ward Steve had the opportunity to serve the people he loved in the Ward as a Sunday School Teacher, Bishop’s counselor, Temple veil worker, Stake High Counselor and as Bishop. Steve truly loved his Brothers and Sisters in the Ward.
Steve and Melanie moved to St. George to “retire”. Steve was active in the Ward as a Sunday School teacher. He also volunteered for a local charity helping families who need a fresh start. While living in St. George he had the great blessing of officiating at the marriage of Sara and Her wonderful Husband Chris Langer, in Zion National Park. It was a perfect day welcoming a new member to our family.
Steve and Melanie moved to Mesa, Arizona this February to live with his beloved Mother-In-Law, Dorathy LaLonde. Sadly, a brief illness proved to be the final test of his earthly journey and Steve passed to the Spirit World on October 3, 2024. Leaving behind his loving wife, Melanie; sons: Anthony, Steve and Chris; Daughter Sara; brother, Sheldon and nieces and nephews: Kisten, Jason and Tiffany (Slaughter), Luc and Arianna LaLonde, and his special great-niece Sadie Holdaway.
