Obituary

Curtis Conrad Lanning, dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away on Thursday, June 30th, 2022 of natural causes. He was 87.

A long-time resident of Mesa, Arizona, Mr. Lanning was born in Minnesota on April 15th, 1935.  He excelled in football and basketball at Lake Benton High School in Lake Benton, MN.

In 1955, Curt married his first wife and shortly after they moved to California. They gave birth to their daughter Connie in 1957, their son Craig in 1960, and their son Paul in 1967. After moving to California, Curt joined his brothers in building a distribution business which he ran until 2011 with great success.

Curt was remarried in 1980 to Lila Bortolin. With their marriage their family grew to four children with Curt’s three and Lila’s son Chris.

Curt was smart, driven, and highly motivated to leave a successful legacy. He eventually became sole owner of the distribution business he started with his brothers, and he grew it into a multistate company. Even in his retired years, many would comment on how Curt could command a room like a CEO. While he had a no non-sense business side, he also had dry sense of humor that was adored by many and a deep love for his family.

Thoroughbred racing, golf, and their dogs were some of Curt and his late wife Lila’s passions. The Lannings, who met at a bowling alley while playing in different leagues, owned hundreds of horses throughout their 40-year marriage. The Thoroughbred Owners of California honored them with the Chairman’s Award in 2002.

Lanning was preceded in death by his parents, George and Corrine Lanning; brothers George, Arthur and David; son Craig Lanning.  Survivors include children, Connie Holdampf (Ken) of Eugene, Oregon and Paul Lanning (Shawn) of Portland, Oregon; three grandchildren, Chelsey Lee (Ryan), Ryan Palmer and Katie Holdampf; and five great-grandchildren, Kale, Riley, Talon, Addyson and Emery.

The family will hold a private memorial gathering in August and asks that any donations made in Curt’s honor go towards the Humane Society
