Obituary

With grateful hearts and cherished memories, we announce the passing of John Warren Whipple, 89, of Mesa, Arizona, on Saturday, June 14, 2025.   He died in his home surrounded by family.

John was born on November 14, 1935, in Los Angeles California to Russell William Whipple Sr. and Alice Laura Boisclair.  John was raised from humble beginnings, from which he learned a remarkable work ethic.  John received his High School Diploma in 1966 while working and going through night school.  At the young age of 14 he put together an engine and gradually built up his skills and became a backyard mechanic, who shared his knowledge.  He was a Machinist, TIG, MIG, Stick and Oxy-Acetylene Welder and had a passion for hands-on creativity. Eventually, his life and career led him to move to Arizona in 1985 where he worked and retired in July of 2001.

A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, John served in numerous teaching and leadership roles. His commitment to service and spiritual strength left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

John married Arlene Plaza Apas on February 17, 2010.  They were sealed on June 2, 2018, in the Gilbert Arizona Temple.  Arlene has been a devoted and loving wife. Together, they shared 15 plus years of travel and exploration, especially throughout their beloved Arizona.

John was a dedicated father who taught his daughters the importance of togetherness, whether on a camping trip or a day at the beach. He loved exploring the outdoors, discovering hidden Indian ruins, camping under the stars, and collecting antiques that told stories of the past. John found great joy in life’s simple pleasures, especially time spent with loved ones.

John is survived by his wife Arlene, his daughters Caprese (Steve) Nelson, Teresa (Dee) Anderson, Sherry Harris, his many grandchildren including Sarah (Nathaniel), Brandi (Brenden), Katie, Mary (Reese), Johnny (Megan), Jonathan (Emily), David, Erika (Cody), Cody, as well as 32 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents Russell and Alice, his brother Russ, and sister Bonnie.

A memorial service honoring John’s life will be held on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at 10:30am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building, located at 618 S. Signal Butte Rd. Mesa, AZ 85208.

John’s life was one well-lived, rich in love, service, and adventure. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
